Marjorie Norman Schwarz’s paintings depict abstract environments that are a unique blend of atmospheric surfaces and nuanced dynamism, compelling the viewer to engage. Intriguing in their depth and complexity, rhythms and meditative color, each painted environment is characterized by a vaporous and cloudy pastel color palette. Occasionally punctuated with vivid accents, Schwarz’s optically compelling surfaces oscillate between fragmentation and open, sweeping expanses. Intentionally devoid of identifiable forms, edges, or reference points, Schwarz’s paintings transform from every perspective and distance, continually challenging the viewer to question their interpretations while surrendering themselves to the blissful, unending experience.

Working with un-thinned water soluble oil paints, Schwarz rhythmically and steadily layers in hatched patterns. Her process relies on constant observation and analysis, while also embracing occasional intuitive interventions. Schwarz’s paintings serve as a means through which she processes her humanity, and her intricate, elusive, and tactile painted atmospheres encourage the viewer to do the same.

Marjorie Norman Schwarz earned her BFA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. She has exhibited across the United States, with recent solo shows at SOCO Gallery in Charlotte, 12.26 in Dallas, Culture Hole in Dallas, Dutton in New York City, Art Palace in Houston, and the Goss Michael Foundation in Dallas. Additionally, her work has been featured in group exhibitions at The Valley Taos in New Mexico, the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi, the University of Texas at Dallas’ SP/N Gallery, Erin Cluley Gallery in Dallas, The Reading Room in Dallas, and ArtSpace 64 in New York City, among others.
