The Armory Show: Chrissy Angliker and Jude Griebel

Massey Klein Gallery’s duo presentation of paintings by Chrissy Angliker and sculptures by Jude Griebel invites viewers to reconsider the relationship between the human body and the living world, using acts of close observation and anthropomorphic forms to reveal deeper networks of connection, care, and ecological awareness.

Distinct in style, medium, and approach, Angliker and Griebel use the body as a way to examine broader systems of attention and our relationship with the more-than-human world. Through materiality, scale, and the reframing of ordinary gestures and forms, both artists encourage inquiry into and contemplation of the relationships between individual experience, human-to-human connection, and larger environmental and social systems.

Chrissy Angliker's oil on canvas paintings feature single figures and crowded fields, where jewel-toned painterly marks glint and swirl within the composition, balancing a muted earthy palette. Her paintings explore themes of human nature and human expression, questioning what remains of human distinction in an age of AI and optimization. The artist’s continued inspiration lies in people residing in nature, remembering their nature, and thus becoming nature. Aligning with that sentiment, the nature of the subject and the medium of paint meet in the dialogue of gravity and grace. Angliker’s paintings highlight the devotional nature and importance of human expression and human consciousness. In seeing the efforts of human expression, of art, we see ourselves.

Griebel's freestanding sculptures feature humanoid figures made of water. Concerned with our entanglement with the surrounding world and the mechanics of consumerism, his work calls us to be more aware of our impact on the natural world. The artist speaks to human excess through increasing amounts of carefully constructed sculptural detail that counters the works’ themes of hyperactive production, consumption, and waste. The species we affect and the waste we create coalesce in vivid forms that illustrate the reach of our consumption habits. Both harbingers of ruin and agents of transformation, Griebel’s sculptures build on art historical traditions of the anthropomorphic body. His sculptures serve to create an immersive sense of storytelling, encouraging active engagement with, and reflection on, uncomfortable topics and complicities in terms of our everyday consumption.

Chrissy Angliker is a Brooklyn-based Swiss American artist. She has exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States, and her work has been featured in several international print and online publications, including ArtNet Online, FAD Magazine, Interview Magazine, Platformart.com, Cool Hunting, Creative Boom, Forbes.com, The Know Culture, The Last Magazine, Bolero Magazine, and Hyperallergic. In 2016, Neidhard & Schoen AG published an in-depth book, Chrissy Angliker PAINT/ING/S, examining Angliker's process and resulting paintings with a focus on her work created between 2014 and 2016. Angliker has been awarded the Rowena Reed Kostellow Award  (Pratt Institute) and the International Takifuji Art Award (Tokyo). In addition to two solo exhibitions, Angliker has previously been featured by Massey Klein Gallery at Split Level in 2025, the Dallas Art Fair in 2024 and 2023, and Future Fair in 2023. 

Jude Griebel is a New York City-based Canadian artist. Recent solo institutional exhibitions include Powerhouse Arts, Brattleboro Museum and Art Center, Leitrim Sculpture Center, Peel Art Gallery Museum + Archives, and IA & A at Hillyer Contemporary Art Center. Noteworthy press includes Artforum, The Wall Street Journal, Hyperallergic, Canadian Art Magazine, Art + Design Magazine, and The National Gallery of Canada Magazine. Griebel’s work is found in numerous permanent collections, including those at Alberta Foundation for the Arts, John Michael Kohler Art Center and Kohler Co., Le Carmel Pamiers, Nickle Galleries at the University of Calgary, Art Gallery of Alberta, Frans Masereel Centrum, Colart Contemporary Canadian Art Collection, Sakima Art Museum, Equitable Bank Group, Silpakorn University, and Volpert Foundation. This year, the artist was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, an Artist Residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and a Sobey Art Award: Longlist from the National Gallery of Canada. In addition to two solo exhibitions, Griebel has previously been featured by Massey Klein Gallery at NADA New York 2025 and NADA House 2024.
