Claire Lieberman, UDBO: Unidentified Dangerous Beautiful Objects artist catalogue

Hardcover

Claire Lieberman's sculptures and installations combine unexpected materials—marble, Jell-O, video, glass—to explore dichotomies like desire and danger, indulgence and guilt, and the sublime and the quirky.

In UDBO, Lieberman reflects on exchanges of play and power in contemporary culture, bringing these tensions into sharp relief. The “Unidentified Dangerous Beautiful Objects” are inspired by children's playthings but their highly polished black marble forms evoke violence and aggression. They are at once elegant and anxious, voluptuous and menacing. When arranged in a tic-tac-toe grid—the UDBO “playground” title of a recent exhibition—the objects (each suggesting perhaps a flower, a grenade, a radio) render a dangerous game indeed.

This 28-page color catalog features close-up images of the artist’s most recent work, as well as installation views of the sculptures set in their "playground" configuration. The book also features an original essay on Lieberman by art critic and poet Barry Schwabsky and an article about the UDBO Playground exhibition written by author and art critic James Gardner.
